About The Foundation
The Meridian Street Foundation (MSF) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 1960. Our first order of business is to help support the preservation of the historic, scenic and aesthetic character of North Meridian Street between Westfield Boulevard and 40th Street (Primary Preservation Area; the North Meridian Street Historic District) and the surrounding area in which it lies (Secondary Preservation Area). The Meridian Street Preservation Commission (MSPC; formed by state statute in 1971) governs the Preservation Areas (click here to learn about the MSPC).
Members are residents of single or multiple family residential dwellings located in the area bordering on and served by North Meridian Street, West Pennsylvania Street, and East Illinois Street, from the southern boundary of 40th Street to the northern boundary of Westfield Boulevard and all east/west streets and alleys between these boundaries (click here to view a boundary map of the MSF Area; area within blue boundary). The area consists of approximately 700 households. All residents in the MSF Area are encouraged to join MSF (click here to learn how to join). The Foundation's board is made up of volunteer members from the MSF Area.
In order to meet our mission a number of MSF committees exist. The Land Use Committee is available to help all those owning property in the Preservation Areas (both Primary and Secondary) with petitions for prior approval of variances and for zoning changes and to help those in the Primary Preservation Area (the North Meridian Street Historic District) with applications for certificates of appropriateness for exterior changes on their property (see the MSPC home page). Our efforts also include beautifcation projects (Beautification Committee) such as planting spring bulbs and trees, placing holiday decorations on lamp posts, and turning Alice Carter Place Park (Midtown Indianapolis, Inc.) into a beautiful entry into the area. We also have a By-Laws Committee, a Crime Watch/Public Safety/Traffic Committee, a Membership Committee, an Events/Auxiliary Committee, and a Communications Committee consisting of a Newsletter subcommittee and a Website/Database/Mass eMail subcommittee. Besides this website and our Newsletter, MSF facilitates communication within the MSF Area by sending CallingPost(TM) phone alerts and iContact(TM) mass email messages regarding the Foundation, neighborhood safety concerns, property tax issues, and other neighborhood issues and events.
